Beginner’s Guide to Wearing Contact Lenses Safely
Trying contact lenses for the first time? It can feel a little scary at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a total game-changer! Whether you’re wearing them to see clearly or to add a pop of color to your look, the key is learning how to handle them safely and comfortably.
Dos and Don’ts of Contact Lens Care
Dos
Don'ts
- Always wash and dry your hands before handling lenses.
- Clean and disinfect reusable lenses after every use with fresh solution.
- Replace your lens case every 3 months.
- Keep a backup pair of glasses handy.
- Consult your eye doctor if you feel pain, redness, or blurry vision.
- Use any non-sterile liquid to clean or store your lenses/case.
- Sleep, shower, or swim with your contacts.
- Wear your lenses longer than recommended.
- Share contact lenses or cases.
- Ignore eye irritation and discomfort, and wear damaged, torn, and dried-out lenses.
Insertion & Removal Tips
- Wash & dry your hands every single time.
- Start with the same eye each time to avoid mixing lenses.
- Check the lens shape to know you’re putting them in the right way—they should look like a bowl, not a plate, when placed on your fingertip.
- Insert gently while looking up or straight ahead, then blink slowly to help it settle.
- To remove, look up, slide it down to the white of your eye, and gently pinch it out.
Beginner Tip: Give your eyes time to adjust! Start with a few hours a day, then add more over time. With a bit of patience and care, you’ll be wearing your lenses like a pro!
