Got something in your eye? Try following these at-home remedies

something in eye

We love a fresh breeze on a good day, but nothing ruins the moment faster than catching something in your eye. Your first instinct is to rub it away, but did you know you could be doing more damage than good?

Many things can get caught in your eye. It can be as natural as a small piece of eyelash, or something as uncomfortable as hard scraps. These types of debris can be tricky to remove, but knowing specific home remedies can help you easily remove them from your eyes.

Flushing out the foreign object in your eye

If you feel that something is in your eye, the most basic way to remove it is to flush it out with water. You can do this by gently lowering the side of your affected eye into water, either by cupping water with your hands or by using a dipper.

Once you’ve submerged your affected eye, blink repeatedly under the water to flush out the foreign object. You can also use a drinking glass or purchase an eyecup from a local drugstore so you can press the rim against your eyesocket. If you hold your head back and blink repeatedly, you should be able to flush out the debris from your eye.

Using wet cotton swabs for larger debris

If basic flushing doesn’t help, try checking your eye further to see if the foreign object is visible. You can look in the mirror for any signs, or have someone else check for you. Using a damp cloth and gently tapping it against the visible debris may help remove it from your eye.

When to seek medical help

If the debris stays stubborn despite irrigation and cotton swabs, your next best option is to consult a doctor. In the worst-case scenario, the foreign object lodges in your eye and potentially causes severe abrasions. In cases like this, seek a professional who can provide the proper eye treatment to resolve the discomfort.

Feeling pain or irritation for more than 24 hours after removing the debris can also be a warning sign. If the discomfort persists, contact your doctor for further advice and to have your condition examined.

A bit of extra caution goes a long way when treating foreign debris lodged in your eye. While it’s helpful to learn first aid remedies, keeping your vision safe also means knowing when to seek professional help.
